Did You Know Big Bear Lake Was Man Made?

Over one hundred years ago, a river ran through what is now Bear Valley. In the year 1883 a native granite arch dam was built. The base of the dam was ten feet thick and stood fifty feet tall. In 1889 the dam was retrofitted to withstand a 8.0 earthquake, and now the base of the dam is 50 feet thick.
Big Bear Lake is a fisherman's paradise. At an elevation of 6,750 feet, Big Bear Lake is one of the best fishing spots in the entire Western States. It is fished year around and has six species of game fish including Rainbow Trout, Largemouth Bass, Catfish, Coho Salmon, Smallmouth Bass, and Bluegill.

Each year the lake is stocked with trout for the sportsman's club May Trout Classic. Four hundred fisherman compete in a two day event for trophies and prise money.
